Initially, producer Surendra Kumar Das had offered to cast Subash Naik, Chapala’s (Parbati Ghose) elder brother, for the role of ‘Neela’. He even went to finalize the decision with her father, Basudev Naik. However, the moment he set eyes on little Chapala, he instantly changed his mind and insisted on casting her for the role of The Lord in Disguise (Neela).
Thus, a star was born! This epic movie also became a stepping stone for Rai Gour (Gour Prasad Ghose).
Surendra Das, a senior LIC official, was so passionate about cinema that he quit his job and sold his shares to finance his dream project. “Shri Jagannath” was an ambitious venture not only for him but also for Odia Cinema. Then CM of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, and CM of Odisha, Harekrushna Mahatab, lent their full support to his efforts by providing sound vans and horses from Calcutta (Kolkata) for the massive outdoor shootings.
